ADAM G. GERTSACOV is an internationally renowned theatre artist based in Yonkers, NY. His original shows have played to standing-room only audiences from Boston to Brazil and Providence to Prague.

As an actor, director, writer, teacher, and clown, Adam has plied his trades all over the world, including San Francisco, Buffalo, Minneapolis, New York, Montreal, Toronto, Copenhagen, Prague, Sáo Paolo,Brazil, and Santiago, Chile. He is the current Clown Laureate of Greenbelt, Maryland.

In Providence (his hometown for 15 years), he was a lead clown with the Pan-Twilight Circus and has worked with numerous theatres, including Trinity Rep, Perishable Theatre, Alias Stage, Big Nazo Puppets, the Real Fun Theatre, and at various fairs and festivals.

Adam currently tours shows all over the world. Original shows and performances include Buffoon Anonymous , Acme Miniature Circus, the Barbie Oedipus, Meet P.T. Barnum Exploring With Henry Hudson and a dance piece entitled Clown's Reverie.

He has appeared as clown in residence (as Doubledown the Gamblin' Clown) at Foxwoods Casino and Resort, and in 1998 was invited to perform at the International Circus Festival ANJO DE PICADEIRO (Angels of the Circus Ring) in Brazil. His show was picked as Best of the Fringe in Montreal and Minnesota, and was showcased as part of the "Best of Spoleto" for the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston SC.

Adam has received several awards for his work, including a RI State Council on the Arts Grant for his solo show the Acme Miniature Circus . That show was named Pick of the Litter and #1 Sure Bet at Fringe Festivals in Montreal and Minnesota, and has appeared to stellar reviews and sold-out crowds wherever it has played. As Professor A.G. Gertsacov, psycho-entomologist and flea-trainer, Adam has been a guest on national and international radio and television in the USA, Australia, South America, and Japan.

Adam has collaborated with several world class artists, including George Coates (in his award winning production of Waiting for Godot) , mime artist Daniel Stein (in an original piece titled Pushing the Envelope), and with Czech Clown Ctibor Turba (in a project for Czech television). Adam has also participated in master classes and workshops with numerous leading clown and physical theatre luminaries including Dario Fo (Nobel Laureate), Bill Irwin (MacArthur Fellow), Carlo Mazzone-Clemente, Ferrucio Soleri, Avner the Eccentric, Fred Curchak, Tony Montanaro, Bolek Polivka, and RonLin Foreman, to name a few.


As a teacher/educational artist, Adam has extensive experience teaching for children and adults. He has taught clowning and gag-writing in workshops and residencies at over a dozen of Rhode Island's finest schools. He was on the RI Arts-In Education Roster , and the Touring Roster for Rhode Island and New England. In 1998 Adam was a guest artist and master teacher in residence at the Instituto de Chileno Norteamericano in Santiago, Chile.

Adam is a graduate of the Ringling Bros. Clown College, The Dell'Arte School of Physical Theatre, the Trinity Rep Conservatory, the University of Pennsylvania (BA), Rhode Island College (MA), the Bryant College Entrepreneurship program, and the Boston School for Bartending, making him the most educated clown in America (barring certain elected officials!)

Adam is the artistic director, boss clown, chief bottle washer, and Big Cheese of the Acme Clown Company. He has had book reviews published in the Millennium Whole Earth Catalog and the Whole Earth Review, and is the author of the best-selling children's book Rhode Island A to Z. He has been the co-host of the Theatre conference on THE WELL, an online community, since 1992.
